The museum collects its rules on a page with the friendly title, «Some rules to follow!». They are practical rules: where to leave your backpack, what you can bring, how to take photos, how to dress.
We report them with the words of the official regulations. Where the museum says nothing, we write it, without filling the gap with assumptions.
The answer in brief
Backpacks, bags and umbrellas go to the cloakroom, which is free, and in some museums you pass through a metal detector. In the rooms you cannot eat or drink; food and liquids do not enter, except those for medical reasons or for infants. Photos for personal use are allowed, without flash, selfie sticks or tripods.
Can you bring backpacks and bags to the Uffizi?
No in the rooms: backpacks, bags, umbrellas and other bulky objects go to the cloakroom, which is free.
The cloakroom is just past the entrances in the loggiato di Levante. Before the metal detector, jackets and coats go in the baskets for the belt check. The tour listings remind you: the small-group tour warns that everyone passes through the metal detector.
If you then do the Vasari Corridor, remember that it exits at Boboli: bulky objects are not allowed, and to retrieve what you left at the cloakroom you must return to the Uffizi from outside.
Can you bring water to the Uffizi?
No: the museum prohibits bringing in food and liquids, with the exception of those for medical reasons or special diets and food for infants.
In the exhibition areas it is also prohibited to eat and drink. At the checks, the allowed liquids must be handed over to the staff. The listing for the walking tour with Accademia and Uffizi says it directly: no water bottles, baby bottles and medicine yes.
For a break there is the café on the second floor, with a panoramic terrace.

Can you take photos in the Uffizi?
Yes, for personal and study use, but without flash, selfie sticks, tripods or professional equipment.
The regulations refer to the law (D.L. 83/2014): you can photograph the works, except those in temporary exhibitions, without tripods or additional lights. For publications or commercial uses you need authorisation. You can also draw and take notes in pencil or with a digital device; colours and tripods are not allowed. Source: the rules page.
In the Vasari Corridor, personal photos are allowed, videos are not.
A guide for one and a half hours, ticket and headsets included: you take the photos yourself, along the route.

The museum asks for «appropriate clothing» and does not name shorts among the prohibited examples.
The examples in the regulations are these: swimwear, overly revealing clothes, wedding dresses, historical costumes and disguises. It is also prohibited to walk barefoot or shirtless. Whether a pair of shorts counts as «too revealing» is assessed by the staff; the museum does not give a measurement.
If on the same day you visit the Duomo, there the rule is more precise: the listing for the dome visit requires knees and shoulders covered, no shorts or tank tops.

The cathedral with a guide and the climb up Brunelleschi’s dome, with terraces or museum depending on the option. Knees and shoulders covered.
Discover the Duomo visit with the dome Tour detailsDo you need a passport to enter the Uffizi?
A valid document is required, not necessarily a passport: the ticket is named.
The name on the ticket must match yours, and for reduced and free tickets the ID must be shown. For the Vasari Corridor the check is double: at the meeting point you show the ticket and ID. Even the museum audio guide, at €6, is rented with an ID.
Which behaviours are prohibited in the rooms?
Touching the works, running, phoning, using trekking poles and leaning against walls and bases, among others.
- Phones off or on silent, no calls.
- Children under 12 always accompanied
- No smoking, including e-cigarettes, and no drones
- Animals not allowed, except guide dogs, assistance dogs and animals certified for pet therapy
- Voice kept down in every room
The surveillance staff, recognisable by badge and uniform, can intervene and remove anyone who puts the works at risk.

What rules apply to groups and guided tours?
Groups of a maximum of 16 people, including the guide, and headsets mandatory for groups over 6 people.
For this reason, tours with a guide include headsets or radios. From 11 people upwards, the group also pays an overall surcharge of €70 on the ticket. The museum prohibits amplifiers and laser pointers.
The tours on GetYourGuide declare smaller groups: maximum 9 for the Uffizi with the Corridor and for the tour with the art historian, up to 15 for Uffizi and Accademia in a group.
Uffizi in groups of up to 9 with an authorised guide and, in the option, the Vasari Corridor to walk through alone.
Check dates for the Uffizi with the Vasari CorridorAre the Uffizi accessible by wheelchair?
Yes: the access ramp is in via della Ninna, and the museum has a lift and courtesy wheelchairs.
If you need an alternative entrance, the reception staff will give you directions. The Corridor regulations indicate free wheelchairs and walkers at Porta 1, without booking or deposit. The toilets are on all floors and equipped. For the Corridor, wheelchairs over 230 kg with the user or longer than 120 cm are not admitted.
The museum has a tactile path, «Uffizi da toccare», and videos in LIS. Contacts: [email protected], +39 055 2388617, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 16:30.
